Confidence tricks
May 27th, 2008A shenanigan (usually the plural form shenanigans is used) is a swindle or mischief causing discomfort or annoyance. A swindle is also known as confidence trick or scam, is an attempt to cheat a person by trying to gain his or her confidence.
Swindlers exploit human weaknesses like greed, dishonesty and vanity , so a person who is satisfied with what he or she has, is less likely to lose money to confidence tricks. However, if you are very honest, naive and trust people easily, these qualities can also be exploited by the con artist.
It is commonly believed that naive, uneducated, or elderly are more likely to be targets of conman and con women. However studies have shown that greedy people who want to earn some quick money and think they can cheat the con man are more likely to lose money. Many people are impressed by smooth talkers and do not bother to verify the authenticity of the claims before taking further action.
The swindler usually has one or more accomplices called shills, who assist the swindler in manipulating the victim , so that he or she parts with his money. The shills will persuade the victim that the scheme being promoted is genuine.
